Sun Valley Community School, which kicked off the 2022-23 school year with a Girls State Championship in soccer, finished the year on a good note at state tennis championships held at Ridgevue High School in Nampa.

The school’s tennis players brought home four 3A division state championships in tennis over the weekend with the boys’ team winning a state championship with a 16-point win over Parma and girls’ team narrowly losing a state championship.

The Wood River High School boys’ tennis team, which won the ISHAA 4A state championship in 2022, repeated as state champions this weekend.

For Sun Valley Community School:

  • Whitney Jannotta and Chloe McGowan were crowned state champions in Girls’ Doubles after 6-3 and 6-4 wins over a team from Fruitland.
  • Gretel Huss and Campbell Spoor won a state championship with 6-4 and 6-2 wins over a team from Fruitland in Mixed Doubles.
  • Matt Carlin was named state champion after 6-3 and 6-2 wins over a competitor from Parma in Boys’ Singles. Charles Goodyear fought to a fourth-place finish in that division.
  • Walker Pate and Beckett Gates were runners up in Boys’ Doubles after 6-2 and 6-1 losses to Parma.
  • The Boys’ Team won the state championship. The Cuttthroat Girls’ Team finished as 2023 Runners Up, losing by just two points to eventual state champions Parma. This is their best ever place at State, according to Richard Whitelaw, the school’s athletic director.

The players are coached by Phil Huss, Kurt Almquist and Peter Samway.

In state track the school’s Addie Parmenter finished fourth in the 400-meter final with a time of 1.01.21 minutes. She placed seventh in the 20M Final with a time of 27.1 seconds.

Ben Haynes finished the 800meter final in 2.17.15.

The “small but mighty” squad, according to Whitelaw, is coached by Drennan Wesley, Ryan Rosmarin and Leila Hauser.

The Wood River High School Boys’ tennis team, which won the ISHAA 4A state championship in 2022 repeated this year. Five of the seven players on this year’s team also played on the 2022 championship team.

  • Garin Beste and Chase Schwartz were crowned state champions in Mens’ Doubles after winning the doubles final against Wood River High School teammates Ballard Griswold and Joe Boccabella 6-3 and 7-6.
