Nothing looks or sounds the same as a Rick Kelly guitar.

They’re made of reclaimed wood from old hotels, bars and churches. And they’ve found their ways into the hands of such musicians as Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and Patti Smith.

The Sun Valley Center for the Arts is screening a 2019 documentary that catches the flavor of Rick Kelly and his apprentice Cindy Hulej.

The movie—“Carmine Street Guitars”--will screen at 4:30 and 7 p.m. tonight—Thursday, Sept. 19—at the Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum.

Screenings will sandwich a free tour of The Center’s visual exhibit “Marketplaces: From Open Air to Online,” at 5:30 tonight at The Center, Fifth and Washington streets.

“It’s a beautiful film about a man who takes all this old wood and turns it into guitars,” said Katelyn Foley, The Center’s director of education.

Veteran filmmaker Ron Mann’s film takes viewers to Greenwich Village. It’s a neighborhood that has long been the epicenter of New York bohemia but is more and more becoming the home of luxe restaurants and buzzer-door clothing stores catering to the nouveau rich.

Kelly’s iconic guitar shop, however, remains resilient to the encroaching gentrification and Mann captures this all-too-quickly vanishing way of life.

The film kicks off The Center’s 2019-20 Documentary Film Series.

“Carmine Street Guitars is more than a guitar shop, more than a workshop,” said Kristine Bretall, The Center’s director of performing arts. “It’s a hub for sharing stories and songs in a way that harkens back to a slower time. This film reminds us not only of the care in craftsmanship but the ways that people can connect through an object that carries the weight of history and love.”
