An astronomy lecture that was knocked out by a broken power pole at Bellevue’s north end will be held on Thursday, June 4.

Tim Frazier’s astronomy talk, “Our Place in the Universe,” which was postponed by a power outage, will be held at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom.

It is the first of four astronomy talks planned by the Hailey Public Library. To register, email Kristin.fletcher@haileypubliclibrary.org.

Frazier, of Bellevue, is a fine artist who has work in more than a dozen international collections including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Past president of the Magic Valley Astronomical Society, he was the faculty sponsor for a NASA-funded high-altitude balloon project for six years. The project launched experiments and cameras to altitudes in excess of 90,000 feet. In 2009 he headed a team from Idaho State University that built an experimental capsule that was launched into space by NASA.

Starting from our place on Earth, Frazier will explore the complexity of our solar system Thursday evening, then move outward to the near stars, into our local arm of the Milky Way galaxy and to galaxies and clusters of galaxies in the far reaches of the universe.

“Our incredible dark skies are a treasure,” said Fletcher, the adult programs coordinator for the Hailey library. “Tim’s remarkable ability to blend science with the majesty of the night sky helps us gain a new perspective of how our little blue planet fits in the infinite reaches of space.”

Future astronomy talks this summer will focus on our summer constellations, daytime solar viewing and the Perseid Meteor Shower.

“THE ROXY LETTERS”

That same night—at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4—the Community Library will hold a virtual conversation between Library Director Jenny Emery Davidson and Mary Pauline Lowry, author of “The Roxy Letters.”

The program will be livestreamed and can be watched on the library’s Livestream page. The conversation will also be recorded for later viewing.

The audience will be able to ask questions through the Livestream chat or by emailing questions to mwilliams@comlib.org.

“The Roxy Letters” is the counterpart to “Bridget Jones.” While Bridget Jones penned a diary, Roxy writes letters…primarily, to her hapless, rent-avoidant ex-boyfriend and her current roommate Everett.

Roxy, a 20-something, is underemployed, under-romanced and fed up with the indignities of being a deli maid at the original Whole Foods. She’s also aghast at the dismaying speed at which her beloved Austin is becoming corporatized. When a new Lululemon pops up, she can stay silent no longer. She decides to team up with her two bet friends to save Austin and keep it weird.

Lowry, born and raised in Austin, holds an MA in English/Creative Writing from the University of Texas and an MFA in Creative Writing from Boise State University. She is the author of the novel “Wildfire” and a regular contributor to O Magazine.

Her books are available for sale at Iconoclast Books.
