Celebrate Dia de los Muertos on Saturday, Oct. 30.

The Sun Valley Museum of Art is hosting a free community celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday inside and outside its Hailey House—the former Ezra Pound house—at 314 Second Ave. S.

There will be an opportunity to view altars, also known as ofrendas or offers, created for this event by community members. People in Latin and Central America, Mexico, Spain and now the United States have longed designed these altars to remember loved ones who have passed away, making their spirit feel welcome.

In this case, representatives of The Alliance of Idaho, The Community Library, Nosotros United, La Cabanita Mex and SVMoA are creating ofrendas honoring local community members or famous Mexican artist, musician or writer who have passed away.

The celebration will also feature traditional music associated with Mexican Dia de los Muertos celebrations. And The Hunger Coalition will provide traditional food.

“We are honored to host the first annual Día de los Muertos community celebration,” said Katelyn Foley, director of Education and Humanities at SVMoA. “Our hope is that this event creates a sense of community and a safe place to learn from one another about traditions that we value.”

Can’t make it on Saturday? The altars will also be on view from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 1-2 at the Hailey House.

SVMoA asks participants to wear face masks when inside the house, regardless of vaccination status.
