Pioneer Cabin is inarguably one of Sun Valley’s most iconic landmarks.

Union Pacific built it as a mountain hostel for skiers, sending them with a chef and porter/ski guides who hauled their belongings up the trail.

Today, of course, Pioneer Cabin is every bit a destination as lakes in Sawtooth Mountains, even offering nightly accommodations on occasion.

One of those who developed an endearing affection for the cabin is Todd Schwarz, who splits his time between Hailey and Twin Falls where he serves as the Provost of the College of Southern Idaho. He made his first trek up the Corral Creek Trail to the cabin in the late 1970s and has returned again and again in the 50 years since.

He’s developed a photographic record, including early photos from the very first guided trip to the cabin in the winter of 1938 that are now owned by The Community Library. And he will share those while recounting the history of Sun Valley’s early Alpine touring operation in a free presentation at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at The Community Library.

To attend in person, RSVP at The program also will be livestreamed and available to watch later at
