Mark Sheehan made a living building ornate fire accessories when he was asked to take a 180-degree turn. Could he carve an ice sculpture to mark Sun Valley Resort’s 50th anniversary?

That was 36 years ago. And the sun carved out of ice and snow has become a staple in front of Sun Valley Lodge ever since—now, with Mark’s son Sean joining in the heavy lifting.

As always, the question they get asked most: “How do you do it?” Eye on Sun Valley’s Karen Bossick pulls the curtain behind their work in today’s Eye on Sun Valley video.
