There are still some tickets for tonight’s concert featuring Ethiopian-born and Brooklyn-raised musician Meklit (pronounced “MUH-kleet”).
The concert, which concludes the Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ 2015–2016 Performing Arts Series, starts at 7 p.m. at the Liberty Theater in Hailey.
Meklit is known for her intoxicating blend of jazz, American folk and singer-songwriter traditions and Ethiopia’s unique melodies and rhythms. She names Nina Simone, Edith Piaf, Leonard Cohen, Claude Debussy, Van Morrison and other diverse and legendary artists among her influences.
The Seattle Times called Meklit “soulful, tremulous and strangely cinematic” and said that her performance will transport listeners to “a softly lit supper club, a Brooklyn stoop, a sunbaked road.”
Though born in Ethiopia and raised in Brooklyn, Meklit Hadero has called San Francisco home since graduating from Yale in 2002. She first made her mark on the national music scene in 2010 with the release of her album On a Day Like this… That release earned her feature stories on NPR, PBS and National Geographic, a full length session on KEXP, and her audience has been growing ever since.
“I was first enchanted by Meklit’s singularly unique voice and style, but have been further impressed by her commitment to her community – both locally in San Francisco, and truly as a global citizen and artist,” said Kristine Bretall, Director of Performing Arts at The Center.
Premium seating for Meklit is $50 for Center member, $60 for nonmembers and $30 for children. Standard seating is $25 for members, $35 nonmember and $15 for children. Prices do not include taxes or processing fees. To reserve your tickets, visit www.sunvalleycenter.org or call 208.726.9491.
