Ski and Trauma-Improving the Odds in the Backcountry

Saturday, November 16, 2019

They’re the folks you see before you ever get to the hospital—the ski patrollers, firefighters and backcountry search and rescue volunteers who are assigned the task of helping you survive a traumatic injury.

The Saint Alphonsus Ski & Trauma Conference was groundbreaking when Dr. Richard Moore started it 14 years ago following a young friend’s accident of a young friend on Bald Mountain. And every year it draws first responders from as far away as Florida to learn how to improve the likelihood of survival outside the ER.

Eye on Sun Valley’s Karen Bossick takes you to this year’s Saint Alphonsus Ski & Trauma Conference held at Sun Valley Resort for a glimpse of what the rescuers learn--and an interview with a young man who lost 19 fellow firefighters during a 2013 wildfire in Yarnell, Ariz.
