The Hunger Coalition celebrated mole—the national dish of Mexico—last week with a mole throw-down. Six chefs cooked up six distinct moles in a cook-off that brought out dozens of community members anxious to taste the heat.

A team of judges that included Bellevue Mayor Kathryn Goldman; Rudy Soto, director of USDA Rural Development; legal affairs officer Sergio Garcia and Becky Lopez, executive director of The Alliance, declared Maria Hernandez the first-place winner.

Laura Arriaga placed second; Ines Pineda, third; Sara Perez, fourth; Lupe Martinez, fifth, and Julia Borrayo, sixth. It was Laura Arriaga who took home the Ladle of Glory, as the community favorite.

Check out the mole—and a dazzling dance by Dirce Flores who teaches dance workshops--in today’s Eye on Sun Valley video.
