Immerse Yourself in St. Terrible and the Gospel of Nothingness

Zach Herbert grew up in the Wood River Valley. But he tapped into Buddhist themes that had their genesis a half world away when he introduced St. Terrible, a self-dubbed freak folk artist, and his Gospel of Nothingness.

Herbert premiered his sounds of the universe and the opportunity to find meaning in nothingness during an evening of experimental music and immersive dancing in December 2016 at The Spot in Ketchum.

And now he’s bringing back what he calls “a philosophical romp through a fantastical world” tonight through Saturday at The Spot.

“The Gospel of Nothingness: Volume II” will start at 8 tonight—Thursday, June 15—and at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 16-17 at The Spot.

The concert, designed to deal with the bizarre and beautiful nature of life, will bring together as many as 18 so-called psychedelic/freak/folk musicians, dancers and actors who will share the story through lightning-mouthed music, dancing, snazzy stage lighting, cool costumes, monologues, drumming, trumpeting and even throat singing like that used by Tibetan monks and Mongolians.

The music embodies psychedelic, classical and even folk influences.

“The show combines elements of dance, performance, art theatre and storytelling with music to create an expansive and immersive experience,” said Herbert. ”Our goal is to challenge the audience’s perception of how a show is traditionally experienced.

“The show is all around you, not just on stage,” he added. “The show itself is dark, at times comical and at other times terrifyingly intimate. It is somewhat of a philosophical romp, exploring existentialist ideas with music and story.”

Herbert refined the show he premiered in Ketchum into something more permanent and viable by simplifying its complexities to fit a 45-minute set at the Treefort Music Festival in Boise in March 2017.

This weekend’s show is similar to the December show at The Spot but will offer a different perspective of that world and story, said Herbert.

“Basically, it’s a different take on what we did before—aesthetically, sonically and performance wise. It’s the same world but on the other side of the mirror, so to speak,” he said.

Herbert has been on and off the road for the past five years, making music with the Sheep Bridge Jumpers, Toast and Izzy Taylor when home. Mark Oliver, Connor Wade, Annette Taylor, Cody Barnhill, Kevin Fitzpatrick, Ryan Braun, Jenny Peterson and others he has performed with will contribute to this show, along with actors from the Spot, such as Kevin Wade and Natalie Battistone.

He started St. Terrible in 2011, inspired by trips to India and Thailand when he tried to make sense of the Hinduism and Buddhism he found in those countries. “Cosmic Nothings,” for instance, tells us we’re just future dust.”Violence” purports that violence is a necessary act of existence.

St. Terrible and the Gospel of Nothingness has gone through several different identities on its way to what it is today.

“It’s been a little overwhelming—wonderfully so—to go from a duo to an 18-piece interactive musical experience in less than a year,” he said. “While the concept, writing and music originate from myself, everyone involved has taken it and made it very much their own. We’ve formed a collective through the creation of this show and continue to build and change the experience and world of the show through the cultivated ideas over everyone involved.

“The show has been an incredibly unique experience for all of us, and this is only our third time putting on this style of show.”

Tickets are $15 for tonight’s show and $20 for the Friday and Saturday shows. They’re available online at www.spotsunvalley.com.
