When the Pacific Northwest’s largest non-motorized parade gets underway for the 60th time on Saturday, Dr. Stephen Pauley will be in the wagon’s seat as Wagon Marshal.

Sun Valley’s very own Star Man, Pauley has been dubbed “Dr. Dark” for his part in getting Dark Sky Ordinances passed in Ketchum, Hailey and Blaine County. The ordinances regulate street lights to minimize light pollution.

Pauley just returned from watching the total solar eclipse at nearly 10,000 feet atop Grand Targhee ski resort. There, he and his wife Marilyn reveled in watching the moon shadow race towards them at 1,600 miles per hour. Stephen is currently working to help create a Dark Sky Reserve in Central Idaho—one of the last places in the United States where people can easily see the Milky Way.

“I was surprised to be named Grand Marshal since I’m more of a sky kind of guy,” said Pauley, who has been watching the parades since moving to the valley in 1991. “But we do have something special here. There are not too many places where you can have a dark sky reserve because you need so much space.”

The City of Ketchum will roll out the behemoth ore wagons that used to ferry ore down Trail Creek Road from mines near Challis, Clayton and Bayhorse at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2.

And Lukas Nelson, son of country outlaw Willie Nelson, will play a free street party concert following the parade with his band Promise of the Real. The 28-year-old Nelson, who has played Sun Valley a handful of times, has played alongside his father, Neil Young and Sheryl Crow and is working on “A Star is Born” remake.

His self-titled album, which came out Friday, Aug. 25, features contributions from Lady Gaga and his father, as well as others.

Hal Cannon, who was among the early organizers of the Northern Rockies Folk Festival, will present an evening of “American Desert Music” with his 3hattrio (Three Hat Trio) at Sun Valley Opera House at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1.

“He moved just outside Zion National Park and gathered up a couple guys who love music as much as he does,” said Diane Josephy Peavey. “It’s wonderful stuff. It’s really edgy, real out there.”

Meanwhile the Papoose Club will stage its 40th annual Pancake Breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday at Ketchum Town Square. All-you-can-eat eggs and sausage, Starbucks’ coffee, fruit and juice costs $10 for adults and $75 for seniors and youth from 3 on up.

Proceeds support educational, cultural and athletic opportunities for the children of the Wood River Valley.
