New York actor Bill Raymond, who starred in “Twelve Monkeys,” “Michael Clayton” and “The Crow,” will take part in a free play reading on Sunday, Oct. 1.
Raymond will read John Patrick Shanley’s “Outside Mullingar” at 6 p.m. at The Spot, 220 Lewis St., in Ketchum. He will be joined by David Janeski, Claudia McCain, and Ally Wepplo.
“Outside Mullingar” revolves around a dying farmer named Tony and his dutiful unmarried son as they reminisce about lost loves and deaths. Always in the back of Tony Sr.’s mind is the notion that his son is not a true man of the earth.
But, wait—there’s a woman. Two women, as a matter of fact. And they add a touch of romantic comedy to the whole mess.
One is a widowed farmwife, whose just-deceased husband purchased a tiny parcel of land from Tony. And that complicates the inheritance he is considering leaving to an American nephew.
The other is the widow’s single daughter who has nursed a grudge against Tony Jr. ever since he knocked her down when she was 6. But, as you might imagine, she has remained single because deep down inside she can’t imagine married life with any other.
John Patrick Shanley is best known for his Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-winning drama “Doubt” and his Oscar-winning romantic comedy “Moonstruck,” which played across the big screen with Cher and Nicholas Cage.”
The play reading is one of a series of readings presented by the Sun Valley Performing Arts, formerly known as the nexStage Theatre Play Reading Series.
