Four women will transform the Liberty Theatre into Toledo, Spain, for a night as they endow it with the passionate and playful rhythms of flamenco.
Las Migas will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey. Tickets start at $30 ($15 for students), available at www.sunvalleycenter.org or by calling 208-726-9491.
“I’m very excited about this concert,” said Kristine Bretall, performing arts director for Sun Valley Center for the Arts. “It’s so rare to have an all-woman flamenco group, and they are so talented. Plus, they were just nominated for Latin Grammy for Best Flamenco Album, to top it all off!”
Las Migas is made up of four women who hail from four different cities in Spain—Barcelona, Sevilla, Cordoba and Lerida.
The veteran Marta Robles and the youngest member, Alicia Grillo, are Andalusian. The other two members, Alba Carmona and violinist Roser Loscos, are Catalan.
“To get a group like Las Migas here to Idaho from Spain is so thrilling,” said Bretall. “They are unique in the flamenco world in so many ways. Not only are they an all-female band but they have changed the rhythms from the rigidity of traditional flamenco to happier, more accessible tempos. And they’ve changed the melodies without losing the music’s trademark intensity.
“It’s as if they took the best aspects of flamenco and adapted them for a non-flamenco audience,” she added.
In addition to Las Migas, The Center’s 201`7-2018 Performing Arts Series includes Mark O’Connor with the O’Connor Band on Dec. 10; Tyler Ramsey on Jan. 18; International Guitar Night on Feb. 6 and Socks in the Frying Pan on March 6.
