Learn about 23 amazing geologic sites in Southern Idaho when Shawn Willsey presents “Geology Underfoot in Southern Idaho” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at Community Library.
Willsey, professor of geology at the College of Southern Idaho, has written a book by the same name. The book is his attempt to bridge the gap between geologists and the curious public in relaying the fascinating stories told by Idaho’s rocks and landscapes.
He calls Southern Idaho a geologic jackpot full of rugged mountains, incredibly young lava fields and steep-walled canyons.
Among the amazing geologic events on display: breccias from one of the largest meteorite impacts in the world. You can see that, by the way, at Leaton Gulch, an unassuming canyon tucked into the hills east of Challis.
Willsey’s book also covers such places as Redfish Lake, Craters of the Moon, the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument and Black Magic Canyon.
