David Mamet’s 1984 Pulitzer Prize-winning “Glengarry Glen Ross” will be the subject of a free reading at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at Gail Severn Gallery.

The 100-minute reading is being presented by Sawtooth Productions and Laughing Stock Theater Company as part of their ongoing series, formerly known as the nexStage Play Readings.

The cast features Andrew Alburger, Jon Kane, David Janeski, Chris Carwithen, Matt Gorby, Bill Nagel and Rick Hoffman. It will be directed by Kane.

The play, based on Mamet’s experience as a real estate agent, revolves around four desperate Chicago real estate agents who are prepared to engage in any number of unethical, illegal acts from lies and flattery to bribery, threats, intimidation and even burglary to sell undesirable real estate dubbed to unwitting prospective buyers.

Of course, they have a good motive—the salesman who clears the high dollar amount will win a Cadillac and the two who perform worst will be fired.

The play, first staged in London, opened on Broadway in 1984 and closed a year later after 378 performances.

It was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Play, Best Director and two Best Featured Actor nominations.

The play was later made into a film starring Jack Lemmon and Al Pacino, who was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor.
