ABC’s Bob Woodruff to Tell of Harrowing Recovery from Roadside Bomb

BY KAREN BOSSICK

ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff had always focused on others—investigating nuclear threats in the hands of Kim Jong Un, the global rise of China and the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

But the detonation of a roadside bomb near Taji, Iraq, in 2006 forced him to look inside as he chronicled his own painstaking recovery from the traumatic brain injury he suffered in the explosion.

Woodruff and his wife Lee will discuss the challenges that families face when life changes in an instant, and they will talk about the challenges that veterans face when they return from service next Sunday during An Evening with Bob and Lee Woodruff.

The talk, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Sun Valley Club, is a fundraiser for Swiftsure Ranch Therapeutic Equestrian Center’s expanded veterans programs.

It will be preceded by an intimate VIP reception during which Woodruff will discuss his work in North Korea, China and Japan, including the brutal treatment of the Rohingya ethnic group by the government of Myanmar, which garnered him his most recent Emmy award.

Those two talks will be followed up with Coffee with Lee from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at a private residence.

Lee Woodruff, a former contributor to CBS This Morning and Good Morning America, has written such books as the New York Times best seller “Those We Love Most” and “Perfectly Imperfect-A Lie in Progress,” about how we need to forgive ourselves and embrace our imperfections.

She will be joined by Gloria Riviera, an ABC News correspondent with Sun Valley ties who has investigated underage sex trafficking, Muslim families’ reaction to President Trump’s travel ban and United Nations Security Council negotiations leading up to the U.s. invasion of Iraq. Riviera won the Alfred I. du Pont Award for her work on the special, “9/11: Answering Children’s Questions.”

Funds raised will provide the seed money to expand programs for military veterans with traumatic brain injuries and post traumatic stress, said Meg Stamper, Swiftsure’s executive director.

“We’ve had great success working with veterans. Every year we have a few long weekends with about 15 in each group who camp out at the ranch. And they leave us with completely different attitudes than when they show up. But there’s such a need we want to expand on what we do. We want to bring in people to train us. We want to expand our curriculum,” she said.

The President’s Day Weekend events originated with a board member who met Lee Woodruff, learning about the foundation the Woodruffs established following Bob’s injury. The Bob Woodruff Foundation helps wounded servicemen and their families receive the long-term care they need and it helps them successfully reintegrate into their communities through programs like Swiftsure’s.

“I think An Evening with Bob and Lee will be beautiful, stimulating evening,” said Stamper. “It’s different from anything the ranch has done before. We are so lucky to have them, as well as Gloria Riviera.”

Stamper said Lee Woodruff plans to talk about the myth of the superwoman and the challenges of trying to do it all.

“She’s a vivacious speaker who has written three best sellers, including ‘In An Instant,’ which chronicles her family’s journey to recovery following her husband’s roadside bomb injury.”

IF YOU GO:

Tickets for “An Evening with Bob and Lee Woodruff” on Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Sun Valley Club are $350, $500 and $800. The $800 option includes an intimate cocktail reception with the Woodruffs at a private residence preceding the event.

For tickets to that and Coffee with Lee, visit www.swiftsureranch.org.

Proceeds will benefit Swiftsure Ranch Therapeutic Equestrian Center’s veterans program. Swiftsure is a nonprofit 501(c)3 that provides equine-assisted activities and therapies that encourage the physical, mental and emotional well being of children and adults with disabilities and challenges.
