One of the most popular operas of all time will be broadcast live in HD from the New York Met on Saturday.
Giacomo Puccini’s “La Boheme” will be broadcast at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Big Wood Cinemas in Hailey. Doors open at 10 a.m. There will not be a pre-opera lecture.
The opera premiered in Turin, Italy, in February 1896, conducted by a young Arturo Toscanini.
It is based on Henri Murger’s novel “Scenes de la viede boheme,” which features a series of vignettes about young bohemians living in the Latin quarter of Paris in the 1840s.
The opera focuses on two of them—Rodolfo and Mimi—and their passionate love affair, which ends in tragedy.
Franco Zeffirelli’s classic production will features Angel Blue, Sonya Yoncheva as Mimi, Michael Fabiano as the poet Rodolfo and Dmytro Popov. Marco Armiliato will conduct.
The opera runs nearly three hours with two intermissions.
Tickets are $16, available at the theatre. Free admission is available for students who call 208-720-5584.
