In 2011 activist and writer Tim Wise decided to examine the concept of white privilege and the conception of racism in American society through his experience with his family and his community.
He titled the book he wrote “White Like Me”—a play on the 1961 book “Black Like Me,” which was written by a white journalist who darkened his skin to learn what life under racial segregation was like.
Wise’s look at ethnicity, the white right and more in the United States was made into an hour-long documentary film titled “White Like Me: Race, Racism and White Privilege in America.”
Light on the Mountains Center for Spiritual Living is joining together with more than 30 other faith communities locations nationwide for a free simultaneous viewing of the film. The film will be followed by live streaming of discussion from each location.
The first showing will be from 1:30 to 4 p.m. today—Sunday, Feb. 25--at the center on Highway 75 just north of Gimlet Road (look for the red, yellow and orange banners). There will be small group discussions and live sharing with other participating locations.
A second free showing of the film will be held at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28. This one will feature a potluck, viewing of the film and child friendly discussion. The Wednesday showing, geared more towards families, will not be done in conjunction with other communities, said John Moreland, the leader of Light on the Mountains.
