Julius Caesar was female. And Brutus and her other cohorts wore leather motorcycle jackets.
Six performers from the Idaho Shakespeare Festival Tour performed two 50-minute retellings of “Julius Caesar” last Friday for students from Silver Creek High School.
The visit was made possible by an Innovating Grant Idea pitched to Blaine County Education Foundation by Silver Creek High School teacher Julie Berry.
When the actors came out on stage in leather motorcycle jackets and high tops, the students sat up a bit more in their chairs, excited that the play written in 1599 was portrayed in contemporary fashion with what they called “cool music” and actors wearing street clothes and bandanas representing gangs.
Berry said she hoped that the opportunity would inspire and engage her students, as many had never seen a live performance.
Students from Wood River High School, Wood River Middle School and Carey High School also attended, with the performance reaching more than 150 students from drama, English and voice classes.
