The Advocates’ Teen Interns—the ETC’s—are screening a film titled “The Mask You Live In” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at Ketchum’s Community Library.
The film follows boys and young men as they struggle with a myriad of identity issues in the process of trying to become “real” men.
They confront often confusing messages presented by the media, fellow students and even adults that teach them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women and resolve conflicts through violence.
The film offers suggestions on how society can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men who are less prone to exhibit behavior disorders, take prescribed stimulant medications, fail in school, binge drink, commit violent crimes and/or take their own lives.
The film has been screened at such film festivals as Sundance, Bentonville, Napa Valley and Side by Side.
Its writer and director Jennifer Siebel Newsom produced the award-winning 2011 documentary “Miss Representation” and the Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated documentary “The Invisible War” about sexual assault in the military. She was also the executive producer for “The Hunting Ground” about sexual assault on college campuses.
The latter two films were screened at the Family of Woman Film Festival in Sun Valley.
The Advocates ETC’s and Jeff Masushita from the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence will hold a question-and-answer session following the screening.
