Get acquainted with Pale Rider and Mindbender when Sun Valley Resort cranks up the Roundhouse gondola for the summer season today.

The gondola will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., combining with the Christmas chairlift to provide access for  mountain bikers to two new flow trails connecting the top of Bald Mountain to the base of River Run.

Pale Rider, a trail for advanced riders named for the Western that Clint Eastwood shot north of Sun Valley, is 1.2 miles long with a 530-foot descent. Natural and human-made jumps and drops make it a “technical-meets-freeride-hybrid”-style trail.

Mindbender is an intermediate freeride track that’s 3.5 miles long and descends 1,334 feet. It combines big jumps and large, flowing berms.

The trails were built with the cooperation of the International Mountain Bicycling Association’s Trail Solutions, Red Elephant Trails, U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.

“Adding these downhill-only intermediate and advanced trails to our system puts Sun Valley on the map for the growing community of gravity athletes, as well as creating a plethora of new loop options,” said Julian Tyo, Sun Valley Resort’s summer trails manager.

The existing Saddle Up Trail will open today, as well. The Lupine Trail will open on July 1 due to elk calving on the perimeter trails of Broadway, Warm Springs and Cold Springs.

Work rerouting the Cold Springs Trail and reconfiguring the bottom of the trail to shaded singletrack has started, with completion expected in late July 2018.

The River Run Trail will be downhill-only biking from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. while the lift is running from June 22 to Sept. 9. Uphill riders and hikers may use the Warm Springs, Cold Springs and Bald Mountain trails.

Lift tickets for those using the gondola by foot are $28 for adults, $20 for youth 3 through 12 and $20 for seniors 65 and older. Children under 2 are free with an adult.

Daily lift tickets allowing bicyclists multiple rides are $42 for adults and $30 for children and seniors. Season bike passes are $389 for adults and $239 for riders 19 and younger, available at the River Run Lodge, Sun Valley Guest Center in the village and online at www.sunvalley.com. Pete Lane’s at the base of Baldy has bikes for rent.

The Roundhouse will be open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with bar service until 4 p.m. The River Run Day Lodge will offer sandwiches, salads, snacks and a full-service bar from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Meanwhile, Yoga on the Mountain returns to the River Run Place on Saturdays throughout the summer beginning Saturday, June 23, with the exception of July 14 and Aug. 4. The classes are free and beginner friendly.

Abby Siebert will lead a Gentle Flow yoga session at 8:45 a.m. Katherine Pleasants will lead a Restorative yoga at 10 a.m. Some mats are available, but guests are encouraged to bring their own.

The Spider Jump trampoline will be in operation at the base of River Run and guests

Mountain bikers have been enjoying lift-accessed mountain biking on Bald Mountain for 20 years.
