Watch a rabbi and a reverend create a psalm on Sunday.
The entire event will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 29, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church Parish Hall on Sun Valley Road.
The Rev. Ken Brannon of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and Rabbi Cantor Robbi Sherwin of the Wood River Jewish Community will unpack sacred poetry and songs from the Bible, looking at them from both Jewish and Christian perspectives.
St. Thomas’ music director Joel Bejot and Rabbi Sherwin, who has published nearly a hundred Jewish sacred songs, will then create a joint musical composition.
Father Brannon wrote a masters’ thesis on one of the psalms and both clergy feel particularly connected to and moved by psalms and other forms of Biblical poetry.
The book of Psalms is in the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament. The title is derived from a Greek translation meaning “instrumental music.”
It’s believed that King David wrote many of the psalms. Many praise God’s work in creation for his work. Some offer laments and petitions for divine assistance.
