STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN BOSSICK

The full orchestra will take the stage tonight when the Sun Valley Summer Symphony opens its 2018 season with Tchaikovsky’s stormy “Symphony No. 4.”

The symphony was composed during the worst periods of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s life, as he went through a deep depression leading to a nervous breakdown.

Yet, the symphony reflects his journey of recovering and his affirmation of the joys of being alive.

Tonight’s opening concert will be followed by the Gala Benefit featuring trumpeter Chris Botti on Monday and a chamber music concert on Tuesday, leading up to Saturday’s Symphonic Safari geared to enchant kids and adults alike.

All start at 6:30 p.m. at the Sun Valley Pavilion with the exception of Tuesday’s concert, which will be held at the Church of the Big Wood in Ketchum.

Here’s a look at the week ahead:

  • Sunday, Aug. 5—Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. Assistant Conductor Sameer Patel will lead a Lawn Chat at 5:45 p.m.
  • Monday, Aug. 6—Gala Benefit featuring trumpeter Chris Botti. This concert, which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Sun Valley Pavilion, is the only concert charging admission. That admission helps keep the remainder of the concerts free. For tickets call 208-622-5607.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 7 at the Church of the Big Wood—The Edgar M. Bronfman String Quartet will perform Beethoven’s Quartet No. 16 for Strings in F Major. The piece is significant in that it’s the last full piece he composed. He died a few months after completing it in 1827. Beethoven’s string quartets were innovative, even shocking, for their time. This one is choppy at times, ominous at times, but it leads to a lively, spirited finale.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 8—Pianist Yefim Bronfman, a Soviet-born Israeli-American pianist, will perform Beethoven’s Concerto No. 4 in G Major for Piano. The work is considered one of the central works of the piano concerto literature, according to Wikipedia.

Also on tap: Adam Schoenberg’s “Finding Rothko,” which will be conducted by Assistant Conductor Sameer Patel. The piece was commissioned by a Tennessee orchestra in 2007, and Schoenberg found inspiration in the paintings of abstract expressionist artist Mark Rothko. In fact, he named his four movements after the primary colors in four Rothko paintings.

Peter Henderson will lead a Lawn Chat at 5:45 p.m.

  • Thursday, Aug. 9—The symphony will perform Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, which the Russian composer based on Spanish folk melodies.

Also, Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5 in E-Flat Major. Sibelius was commissioned by the Finnish government to write this as a sort of “Happy Birthday to Me” on the occasion of his 50th birthday.

Sameer Patel will lead a Lawn Chat at 5:45 p.m.

  • Friday, Aug. 10—The Summer Music Institute students will present two concerts today, as well as four recitals on Aug. 8, 9 and 11, to show what they’ve learned during a week of workshops taught by symphony musicians.

Today’s Afternoon Concert at 3 p.m. will feature the Prelude String Orchestra, Prelude Choir and Concert Choir.

The Evening Concert at 6:30 p.m. will feature the Philhamonia Orchestra, Chamber Singers, The Encounter Chamber Orchestra and Sun Valley Youth Orchestra. On tap: Mozart’s “Dies Irae from Requiem in D Minor.”

  • Saturday, Aug. 11-The Family Concert is billed as a “Symphonic Safari” and will include such pieces as Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumblebee” and John Williams’ “Hedwig’s Theme from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” The evening will be capped by R.L. Rowsey’s narration of “Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant.”

A lawn chat will be led by Peter Henderson at 5:45 p.m.
