It was the 2017 Women’s March in Boise that prompted Patty Costello to write a children’s book.
“Catalina and the King’s Wall” is about a foolish king who builds a wall to keep people neighbors away. But, his fear of differences is overcome by a crafty baker who dreams up a delicious solution.
Costello will offer a presentation on Tuesday to teach parents about the pros and cons of teaching kids about race and stereotypes.
Her presentation, “Why Our Children’s Future Depends on Libraries, Books and Imagination,” will also present the latest psychological research on libraries and books as teaching tools for children. Costello will discuss how parents can create an enriched literacy environment. And she will discuss the future of children’s literature.
The free presentation will start at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at Ketchum’s Community Library.
Costello, a picture book author with a PhD in Neuroscience, lives in Boise with her husband toddler and two dogs. She oversees the undergraduate psychology program for Walden University, an accredited online college.
