The Advocates have scheduled a handful of events during October, which has been proclaimed Domestic Violence Awareness Month, as well as Bullying Prevention Month.

The events include:

  • Thursday, Oct. 11--Free screening of “RBG,” profiling 85-year-old U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, at 6 p.m. at Ketchum’s Community Library.
  • Thursday, Oct. 11--Day of Action-Wear Purple to show support for survivors and for ending domestic violence. Purple wearers are encouraged to post their colors on social media with the tag #purplethursday @buildsafelives on Insta or @theadvocates on Facebook.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 24--Unity Day, for kindness, acceptance and inclusion against bullying. Supporters are encouraged to wear orange to show the world that no child should ever experience bullying. Take a photo and post it and tag #unityday2018 @buildsafelives.
  • Thursday, Oct. 25--Free screening of “RBG” at 5:30 p.m. at the Hailey Public Library. The film profiles Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who has developed a breathtaking legal legacy while becoming an unexpected popular culture icon.
  • Saturday, Oct. 27--Free Krav Maga Self-Defense Class from 9 a.m. to noon at the Wood River YMCA. Taught by Tracie Ide, a level IV certified Krav Maga instructor from Boise. For information, contact Darrel Harris at The Advocates at 208-788-4191.

One in three women and one in seven men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime, said Tricia Swartling, the CEO of The Advocates.

“And although the Wood River Valley is a wonderful place to live and raise a family, we are not immune to the epidemic of domestic violence,” she added. “Last year The Advocates assisted 554 community members experiencing abuse and offered 5,147 bed nights of safety in shelter and transitional housing.”

Anyone experiencing emotional, physical or sexual abuse should call 208-788-4188 for confidential assistance.
