Mila Turajlic grew up in a Belgrade apartment with a locked door.

It was, it turned out, a locked door that kept her family separated from its past for more than 70 years. But, as Turajlic began an intimate conversation with her mother, she began chronicling a house and country haunted by history and she began constructing a searing portrait of an activist in times of great turmoil.

Turajlic captured the trauma of ex-Yugoslavia—or modern-day Serbia—in the documentary film “The Other Side of Everything,” And this so-called “political ghost story” will be shown at 4:30 and 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum.

The film is being presented in conjunction with the Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ BIG IDEA project “We the People: Protest and Patriotism.”

The film won the IDFA Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary at the Toronto International Film Festival where it premiered in 2017. It was nominated for the LUX PRIZE of the European Parliament and short-listed for the European Film Academy Award for Best Documentary.

“In researching films to explore the topic of Protest and Patriotism, I kept returning to ‘The Other Side of Everything,’ ” said Kristine Bretall, director of Performing Arts at The Center. “This award-winning film homes in on the question of protest as an act of loving your country and wanting to fight for it.”

Though Yugoslavia politics seem far removed from our own, the film’s insights into protest are relevant and powerful, Bretall added.

“The film focuses on communism, the civil war and the aftermath in Yugoslavia and asks the audience to consider: What happens after a revolution? And in a revolution fueled by nationalism, can a democracy flourish?” she added.
