Want your own personal ski hill?
Soldier Mountain Ski Area near Fairfield is up for sale for the second time in three years.
The owners--Matt and Diane McFerran—purchased the resort in 2015 for $149,000 in an unusual sale via Facebook.
Moving to Fairfield from Bend, Ore., they put in a ton of improvements to the lodge and equipment, buying snow groomers and a Magic Carpet to carry beginners up a gentle hill. But they say the ski area needs more capital than they have to realize the area’s full potential.
They’d like to put in snowmaking, for instance. Soldier Mountain is getting dumped on this year but struggled to open last year.
The McFerrans say they would be willing to stay on to run the operation if the new owners prefer to be more hands off.
Soldier Mountain is a Ma and Pa-type hill with a lodge boasting tasty hamburgers and cinnamon rolls. It also has a cat skiing operation that access some amazing terrain under Smoky Dome.
Sixty-three miles from Ketchum, it was founded in 1948 and was owned by actor Bruce Willis from the late 1990s until 2012 when he donated it to the community.
It has 1,150 skiable acres, three chairlifts, 36 runs and a lodge that was built several years ago. It has 2,000 cat skiing acres and a snow cat that can ferry 12 skiers.
