Animal lovers and conservationists will find the discussions to their liking at The Community Library in Ketchum this week.

  • On Wednesday, May 1, at 6 p.m. Curtis Evans, a raptor trainer with The Peregrine Fund, will bring live raptors to the library as he talks about the birds’ adaptations and ongoing projects of The Peregrine Fund. The presentation is being presented in conjunction with the Environmental Resource Center’s Spring Science Series, which will take the birds into all second-and third-grade classrooms in Blaine County.

The Perigrine Fund, based in Boise, has been working since 1970 to prevent raptor extinctions and protector areas of raptor habitat.

  • On Thursday, May 2, at 6 p.m. Glenn and Caryl Elzinga will discuss how they’ve partnered with The Nature Conservancy to manage livestock on public lands on the 45,000-acre Hat Creek allotment near May, 39 miles south of Salmon near the Pahsimeroi River on the east side of the Lost River Range.

The Elzingas, owners of the Alderspring Ranch, a family-owned grass-finished organic cattle ranch, use modern cowboys to keep cattle out of areas of concern to conserve riparian areas and avoid wolf predation. The shift from “out” to “in” management also addresses ecological benefits for sage grouse, bull trout and sensitive plant species.

  • On Friday, May 3, at 4 p.m. author Rick Bass and his MFA students at Boise State University will read some of their works.

Bass, an environmental activist from Montana, is teaching the fiction workshop in Creative Writing as the 2019 Visiting Distinguished Writer at BSU. He has written more than 25 books of fiction and nonfiction, including “The Watch,” “For a Little While” and “Why I came West.”

The students have written some remarkably creative fiction in "The Idaho Review," noted Library Director Jenny Emery Davidson. Corinna Vallianatos, for instance, wrote a short story titled "Cuba" about the young wife of a charismatic writer who suddenly confronts a "Dust Bowl" of time rushing past her.
