Last week Christine Davis-Jeffers watched school kids combine math and art to design their creative visions of a two-story swimming pool and other living and play places for a new age.
Sun Valley Center for the Arts educators use art on projects like this to enhance students’ learning of math, science and other core curriculum, And some of these projects will be on display Thursday through Saturday at The Center in Ketchum as part of a special Classroom Enrichment Exhibition.
The Center will throw an Opening Celebration titled “Deepen the Discussion” from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 30. Refreshments will be served.
“It’s a great way for the students to showcase their work and to show the community how we can work art into the core curriculum,” said Davis-Jeffers, the executive director of The Center.
Enrichment projects are offered to core subject teachers and sixth- through 12th grade students across the Blaine County School District. They offer students new tools for interpretation and problem solving, while encouraging three-dimensional learning, critical thinking and self-expression.
The projects, sponsored by Wendy and Alan Pesky, reached 740 students this year.
“The program is now six years old, and it’s incredible to see how it has grown,” said Katelyn Foley, director of education and humanities at The Center. “By showcasing student artwork, we hope to share with our community the power of arts integration on learning.”
The exhibition will be on view from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, May 30-31 and from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 1.
