STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN BOSSICK

Check out some amazingly large jumbo-sized aspen trees when retired U.S. National Forest forester John Shelly leads his annual Big Tree Trek.

Shelly will divulge some of his pet trees on behalf of the Wood River Chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Participants will take measurements of the trees to determine if one is a state record holder. Along the way they will look at fall characteristics of plants and talk about their family characteristics.

The walk, free to the public, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participants should meet at the Hailey Park and Ride at River and Bullion Streets by 9 a.m. to arrange carpools or at the Timmerman Hill Rest Stop by 9:30 a.m. From there the group will head out Fish Creek Road between Craters of the Moon National Monument and Carey.

The trip involves mostly driving. But there is a short amount of walking. The level of difficulty is termed moderate as it heads a short distance through uneven grassland

Participants should bring lunch and water and wear sturdy shoes and clothing prepared for whatever fall throws at them.
