BY KAREN BOSSICK

China has been in the news a lot lately what with the Trump tariffs and U.S.-China trade disputes.

Learn some of the behind-the-scenes maneuvering when a former charge d’affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing will talk about “Today’s China: It’s Political Culture and Political Economy” at 6 tonight—Tuesday, Oct. 15—at Ketchum’s Community Library.

William McCahill will talk about the People ‘s Republic of China’s current leadership, the role of the Chinese Communist Party in governing the state and directing the economy and how China is challenging American and other national interests.

He’ll look at the trade disputes, intellectual property theft, China’s military expansion and the ways the Chinese influence operations in the United States.

McCahill is a senior resident fellow with the National Bureau of Asian Research. He focuses on Chinese domestic politics and policies and how those affect foreign investors and businesses. His professional experience in China dates back 43 years to 1976.

His visit is being organized by the Boise Committee on Foreign Relations.

A LOOK AT EDUCATION VS. PRISON FUNDING ON THURSDAY:

Lauren Necochea, director of the Idaho Center for Fiscal Policy, will discuss education and incarceration in Idaho during a free presentation titled “What’s the Price of Our Priorities?” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17.

Over the past 25 years Idaho K-12 school spending has grown by 87 percent and higher education by 26 percent, adjusted for inflation. Prison spending has increased by over 200 percent during that time, she notes.
