Nathaniel Hackmann kicks off Winter Festival Tonight

“The Magnificent Baritone” will kick off Sun Valley Opera’s 2019/20 Winter Festival tonight at The Argyros Center for the Performing Arts.

Nathaniel Hackmann, who portrayed Jean Valjean and Javert in “Les Miserables” on Broadway, will perform at 7:30 p.m. tonight—Saturday, Dec. 28—at the Argyros. The black tie optional event titled “Diamonds in the Snow—A Holiday Soiree” kicks off with cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres at 6:30 p.m. followed by the concert and a Meet & Greet with Sweets.

Hackmann received great reviews for his seductive, dulcet tunes that transported the audience back to the golden Kelly and Sinatra era in “Leonard Bernstein: On the Town.” He’s also appeared in “Oklahoma” and is a big fan of numbers from such classics as “Carousel,” “West Side Story” and “South Pacific.”

Patrons are being encouraged to park at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church on Sun Valley Road. A shuttle will be provided to the arts center.

  • A concert titled “Vienna Meets New York” starring Zachary James and Melody Wilson will be held Jan. 27 at the Sun Valley Community School Theatre. The concert will start at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at Rwatson.svo@gmail.com, at 208-726-0991 or at www.sunvalleyopera.com.

    James, an international opera singer known for his huge, robust bass, originated the role of Lurch in “The Addams Family” on Broadway. He created the role of Abraham Lincoln in Philip Glass’s opera “The Perfect American” and was just recently seen portraying Amenhotep in the Olivier Award winning production of “Akhnaten,” which was screened as part of the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD series.

    Melody Wilson, a rising young mezzo-soprano, recently make her debut with Seattle Opera as Olga in “Eugen Onegin.” She also portrayed the mezzo-soprano soloist in Paul Moravec’s “Sanctuary Road” with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Most recently, she, too, was tin the MET HD production of “Akhnaten” with Zachary James.

  • On January 30, local songstress Judith McQueen and the Alan Pennay Trio will present a special concert benefitting Sun Valley Opera. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Argyros Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available at www.theargyros.org or 208-726-7872.

    McQueen is perhaps best known in Sun Valley for her beautiful catering. But as a contralto she spent 12 years as a performer before launching her career as a chef and proprietor of Judith McQueen Entertains.

  • Broadway’s “Hamilton” star Bryan Terrell Clark will sing “Songs of Love and Founding Fathers” on Feb. 15 and 16. Clark will appear at a Diva Party in a private home at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15. He will appear in concert at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16 at the Sun Valley Opera House. Diva Party tickets are available by calling Robyn Watson at 208-726-0991. Those with Diva Party tickets will also get tickets to the concert.

    Hamilton played George Washington in “Hamilton.” He made his Broadway debut playing the role of Marvin Gaye in “Motown: The Musical,” which received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.

    A graduate of the Yale School of Drama and Temple University, he has appeared in the Netflix mini series “When They See Us” and on OWN’s “Queen Sugar,” as well as a host of TV shows, such as “NCIS: New Orleans,” ”Blue Bloods,” “Person of Interest” and “Unforgettable.”

  • Mezzo Soprano Chrystal E. Williams will present a Signature Salon in a private home at 7 p.m. Monday,March 9. Tickets are available from Robyn Watson at 208-726-0991.

Williams has been described by leading critics as “Strong and so assured” and “in complete command of the vocal calisthenics.”
