Portland Cello Project to Bow Online
Wednesday, April 29, 2020

The Sun Valley Museum of Arts will co-present a live online concert at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 2, on the World Wide Web.

The streamed concert will feature four performers from the Portland Cello Project: Nancy Ives, Diane Chaplin, Gideon Freudmann and Skip von Kuske.

The Project’s Douglas Jenkins is artistic director for the virtual live concert, which will originate in the artists’ studio. Or, backyard, if the weather cooperates.

They will perform music not normally associated with the cello, including selections from Pantera, Taylor Swift, and Kanye West alongside Bach, Rossini and Sain-Saens.

The Portland Cello Project was formed in 2006 when a group of nine cellists took the stage in Portland to perform western classical music in an informal setting. Many thought it would be a one-time thing. But by 2009 the group had evolved into a nationally recognized performing and educational group with a revolving casts of cellists.

The cellists have collaborated with a myriad of artists, including Garrison Keillor and Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary.

The group performed in Sun Valley as part of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ 2014-15 Winter Concert Series. It returned in 2018 to present a Members Appreciation Concert.

SVMoA is co-presenting the event with Warren Miller Performing Arts Center in Big Sky, Mont.

Though free, pre-registration is required at

Attendees should set up Zoom on their computers ahead of time. The portal will open at 4:50 p.m. and the feed will begin at 5 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time. Participants will be able to ask questions following the performance during a moderated question-and answer-session with the musicians.
