Dr. Garret Coman grew up in Boise, but his medical studies took him throughout the United States including to Virginia Tech where he participated in a clinical trials research fellowship.
He calls the opportunity to return to Idaho—specifically to Ketchum to serve as a dermatologist—a dream come true.
“The access to the outdoors and public land is unbeatable,” he said. “I have a 16-week-old puppy, a pudelpointer named Duke, who is keeping me busy with training and exploring our new home.”
Coman, who speaks both English and Spanish, is working out of St. Luke’s Clinic-Dermatology in Ketchum. He takes the place of Dr. Steven Karassik, who retired after 30-plus years of practice and plans to continue to enjoy the recreation, arts and culture of the Sun Valley area.
“We are excited to have Dr. Coman join us, in addition to bringing a fresh perspective, having another full-time provider will assist us in meeting the needs of the community,” said Dr. Matthew Reeck, who also works in the clinic, along with Nurse Practitioner Caroline Hobbs.
Coman graduated from Timberline high School in East Boise. After receiving an undergraduate degree in economics from Pepperdine University in Southern California, he earned his medical degree at University of Utah School of Medicine.
He pursued a master’s degree in biomedical engineering, focused on medical device design, held a dermatopharmacology research fellowship in the Maibach lab at the University of California-San Francisco and held an internship in internal medicine and dermatology residency at the University of Utah.
He is interested in medical innovation, particularly the interface of medical device design and percutaneous drug delivery. And he continues to work with colleagues across the country on dermatology innovation projects to improve education and patient care.
Coman enjoys skiing, mountain biking, trail running, backpacking, river trips, fly fishing and classic cars in his spare time.
“I am joining a terrific team that puts excellent patient care first,” said Coman. “I am also happy to be in a community where I can pursue my outdoor hobbies and be close to family.”
