Sun Valley Music Festival’s Principal Cello Amos Yang Will perform an all-new performance of the masterpiece at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, at svmusicfestival.org/event/festival-home-san-francisco

One of classical music’s most iconic and profound works, the Sixth Cello Suite is considered  more free form than Bach’s others. It is notable for its virtuosic passages.

Bach’s cello suites are now some of the most frequently performed and recognizable solo compositions written for cello. But they languished in quiet obscurity for over 150 years.

In 1890, cello virtuoso Pablo Casals discovered tattered copies of the suites at a second-hand shop in Barcelona. His appreciation for them grew as he studied them, leading to his seminal audio recordings in 1936, which paved the way for their current fame.

Yang grew up in San Francisco where he was a member of the San Francisco Youth Orchestra and San Francisco Boys Choir. He got a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Juilliard School and serves on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the San Francisco Academy Orchestra, in addition to performing with the Sun Valley Music Festival for years.

The Festival plans to make an in-person return to the Sun Valley Pavilion July 26 through Aug. 19.
