Free Skiing With Donuts to Boot
Monday, March 15, 2021

The Blaine County Recreation District is inviting the community to ski and snowshoe for free on the BCRD Nordic and snowshoe trails for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.

The fee-free use of the trails was made possible by a gift to the community from Peter and Quin Curran.

It reprises the BCRD’s gift to the community last year when it made the use of trails free to enable people to stay healthy as the pandemic forced people to shelter at home.

Just in case you need an extra incentive, Galena Lodge is staying its annual World Loppet on Sunday, March 21, complete with beer and donuts provided along the trail.

And it will follow that up with the Ride Stride Glide on April 3, during which individuals or teams can have it all with a bike/run/ski around Galena trails.

The 160-kilometer BCRD Nordic trail system is one of the largest in the United States and offers a grooming season that has operated from Thanksgiving to May in past years.

Skiing conditions have been fabulous this week and that goes for the trails at the Sun Valley Nordic Center, as well. The Sun Valley Nordic Center plans to close for the season at the end of the day on Sunday, March 21.

Those taking advantage of the BCRD’s free skiing are asked to:

  • Restrict skiing with dogs to trails specifically designated for dogs. Those include the Durrance and North Fork Loops, Harriman Trail from SNRA to just south of Easley, the Cabin and Northwood trails at Galena Lodge, Billy’s Bridge and a portion of the Quigley loops.
  • Pick up and dispose of your dog’s waste.
  • Refrain from walking on any Nordic ski or snowshoe trail with the exception of the Wood River Trail.
  • Be kind and courteous to others.
