Firefighters are on the scene of a fire at the Croy Street Exchange Building in downtown Hailey.

“Nothing left but embers, smoke and memories,” said Hailey resident Bonnie Paine, as she observed the scene shortly after 8 a.m. “Nearby residents heard a couple of booms about 5:15 a.m. People are already talking about whether they might be able to build a multi-family apartment complex on the now vacant lot.”

The building formerly housed Copy & Print. It also has served as headquarters for the Blaine County Democrats and been the home to architects and other small businesses.

Co-owner Michelle Stennett informed tenants in December that the building would be converted to workforce housing this year.

Chief Ron Bateman said firefighters were called to a commercial structure fire at 5:10 a.m. today. Hailey Fire Chief Mike Baledge arrived on the scene at 5:15 a.m. where he established command and reported a fully involved structure fire at the corner of Croy and River streets.

Wood River Engie 611 arrived on the scene at 5:15 a.m. and positioned at the northwest corner of the fire, initiating a defensive fire attack.

They were augmented by Wood River Fire Rescue and Bellevue Fire Department. Additional units were requested from Ketchum Fire Department, Sun Valley Fire Department and North Blaine County Fire to assist the Hailey Fire Department.

Vehicles and buildings on the west side of River Street sustained heat damage. That blocks includes The Advocates new building, as well as a dentist’s office and hearing aid office.

The Hailey City Street Department arrived on the scene about 7 a.m. to assist with moving debris to overhaul the fire.

Crews remain on the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Idaho State Fire Marshal’s office is expected to arrive at midday to assist.
