Learn the hand clapping, percussive footwork and intricate body movements behind flamenco during a free workshop and performance Saturday at the Ketchum Town Square.
It promises to be a sizzling display, fitting for the sizzling temperatures of the past few weeks.
Kelli Brown, artistic director for Flamenco Idaho/Cuadro Nuevo, will teach the basics of the dance from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 17. A 45-minute performance featuring the flamenco dance company and classical guitar will follow.
The show is sponsored by the Ketchum Arts Commission and the City of Ketchum.
Cuadro Nuevo performs new and traditional works featuring artists who come from a variety of backgrounds, including classical, cultural and experimental music, visual art and poetry.
Brown has choreographed more than 30 modern dance works for Off Center Dance and five short dance videos. She has traveled to Spain four times to learn about flamenco in its birthplace, with the help of two grants for study in Granada.
She is an adjunct professor for Boise State University and a dance educator at Idaho Arts Charter School. And she’s performed with several groups, including Idaho Dance Theatre, Drop Dance Collective and Boise Dance Co-op. She received her Master of Arts in Dance form California State University-Long Beach and her MFA in dance performance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
