Imagine if the tables were turned on a male construction worker whistling at a passing woman, and she turned around and dished out what he was giving.
Imagine what it might look like watching a few women watching “all the pretty young men” at a male strip club for the first time.
“Pretty hysterical,” said Patsy Wygle.
Laughing Stock Theatre Company hopes to elicit a cornucopia of laughs when it presents “A…My Name Will Always Be Alice” at 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, Sept. 8-11, at The Argyros Center for the Performing Arts in Ketchum.
“We did this at The Spot in September 2019. We sold out every night so we decided to do it again,” said Patsy Wygle. “We have four of the same women who performed it before, and this time we have a three-piece band whereas last time we had just a piano.”
The all-female comedy musical revue will star Megan Mahoney, Ally Wepplo, Rachel Aanestad, Karen Nelson and Patsy Wygle.
It’s a little bawdy, a little raunchy and a lot funny, said Wygle. Conceived by Joan Micklin Silver and Julianne Boyde, it enjoyed long runs Off Broadway in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. Many consider it as relevant today as it was then, as it explores the experience of contemporary women from teenagers to those in a nursing home through skits and music that runs the gamut of rock, Broadway country and gospel.
A New York Times review recounts how a song called “Friends” tells the history of a friendship that sustained two women from high school through marriage and old age. A song titled “Trash” begins as a parody of pulp women’s fiction and ends up dramatizing the disappointed life of an office receptionist who chases after the fantasies propagated by novelist Judith Krantz. Another, “Honeypot,” revolves around a blues singer seeking help from a psychologist.
“It is at once a parody of modern sexual therapy and a devilish explication of the disguised erotic content of old-time blues lyrics,” the reviewer says of the latter skit.
Tickets for the 90-minute revue start at $30, available at https://theargyros.org There will be seven cabaret-style tables seating up to four people each with a bottle of wine for $150.
Attendees must be vaccinated based on COVID protocols required by the Actors’ Equity Association and The Argyros. Attendees must be masked during the performance.
