Sun Valley Museum of Art will offer two free tours of its current visual arts exhibition, “Untrammeled: At Wilderness’ Edge,” at 4:30 and 5:30 tonight—Thursday, Sept. 30.
It will follow the second with a discussion about the wilderness.
The exhibition takes its title from the 1964 Wilderness Act, in which Howard Zahniser of The Wilderness Society defined wilderness as “an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.”
It features two immersive installations covered with photographs that Ketchum photographer Laura McPhee made in the mountains north of Ketchum. Charred trees are suspended in the spaces and McPhee has used a new experimental format for presenting her photographs as she invites visitors to consider the role of wildfire in the management.
Immediately following the second tour, Sawtooth National Recreation Area Ranger Kirk Flannigan and retired Sawtooth Forest Wilderness and Trails Coordinator Liese Dean will lead a discussion of evolving ides about wilderness management, use and recreation in the 21st century.
The discussion is free but pre-registration is required at https://svmoa.org
The museum is located at 191 Fifth Street East.
