POEM AND PHOTO BY ED NORTHEN
We use the term holiday
derived from the Old English
Holy Day
but have strayed
from the purpose
of gratitude
more thought given
to activities
then contemplative reflection
formation abdicated
to entertainment
and fun
gratitude
turns the soul
from coveting
to appreciation
for provision
for life
to compassion
for others
acknowledging
our blessings.
Gratitude
a discipline
not simply an inward feeling
but an outward endeavor
enacted
from a grateful heart
which alters,
forms within us
something sacred
something holy
