In 1875 Georges Bizet premiered the smoldering “Carmen” featuring the fiery woman whose love is as fleeting as it is passionate.
Opera Idaho will retell the story of seduction, obsession and tragedy surrounding the love triangle involving an irresistible Romani woman, a military man and a famous bullfighter this coming week.
This production is set in 1936 at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.
Stage Director Andrew Nienaber updated the opera to make it more palatable for modern sensibilities because, he says, so much has changed in the world since the opera premiered in 1875.
With everything from intimate solos to rousing choruses, “Carmen” contains some of the best-loved and most memorable music of any opera.
The opera is at 7:30 p.m. Friday Jan. 28, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30 at The Morrison Center in Boise.
It stars Briana Elyse Hunter as Carmen, Joshua Dennis as Don Jose and kyu Won Han as Escamillo, the bullfighter.
Tickets start at $27.50 and are available at https://operaidaho.org
