Big Hitch Ore Wagons Make the Practice Rounds

Wednesday, August 31, 2022

They’re as thin as Twiggy. And as tall as Wilt Chamberlain.

And it’s incredible to think that someone would drive them up and down the Trail Creek Road, which boasted a 12 percent grade in the heyday of the Big Hitch ore wagons.

You can’t just get behind the wheel and turn the key in the ignition when it comes time to drive these wagons down Sun Valley Road. Eye on Sun Valley’s Karen Bossick takes you behind the scenes of the Big Hitch, which makes up the centerpiece of this weekend’s Wagon Days parade.

Check it out as muleskinner Bobby Tanner, who drives the 20-mule Borax team of “Death Valley Days” fame, readies his mules for the big parade.
