Warren Miller’s ‘Line of Descent’ Features Three Sun Valley Athletes

Val d’Isere, France, may be halfway around the world.

But Sun Valley skiers Lexi DuPont and McKenna Peterson felt very much at home as they made ski turns with friend in the historic ski spot where ski legend Jean-Claude Killy made his first turns.

Rather than worry about bagging laps or seeing how much vertical they could ski, they and fellow skier Amie Engerbretson soaked in the ambience with a measure of awe as they marveled at the intricate systems of chairlifts, tunnels and trams, stunning views of the Italian Alps and apres ski scene.

Did we mention that they danced on tables in their ski boots?

You can see it all for yourself when Warren Miller “Line of Descent” marks the official launch of the 2017-18 ski season Friday and Saturday at the Sun Valley Opera House.

And Sun Valley residents will get a bonus as the 68th Warren Miller film also includes footage of Sun Valley native Collin Collins reveling in powder shots in Montana’s Glacier Country.

“The ski conditions weren’t ideal while we were in France, but we made the most of it and had a bunch of fun. Lexi, Amie and I have fun wherever we go,” said Peterson. “And I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at the show this weekend.”

Peterson and Lexi DuPont will host this weekend’s showings of “Line of Descent.”

The movie, presented locally by Pete Lane’s Mountain Sports, will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, and at 4:30 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. There will be giveaways and drawings, ranging from Sun Valley lift tickets to helmets from Smith Optics.

Advance tickets are $16, available online or at the Sun Valley Guest Information Center. Tickets purchased at the door are $18. All movie ticket holders will get a coupon to Pete Lane’s and a buy-one get-one coupon for a beer at the Warfield Distillery and Brewery.

New this year is a Pray for Snow Party starting at 6 p.m. Friday outside the Opera House and again on Saturday from 5:30 to 8 p.m.  There’ll be beers, brats and lawn games, with the first Sun Valley Cornhole Championship at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Sun Valley FreeRide coaches will be on hand to answer questions about local programs available for aspiring junior skiers and riders.

In addition to the segment featuring Peterson and DuPont, this year’s Warren Miller movie takes armchair skiers and boarders powsurfing—or powder surfing—near Mustang Powder Lodge in British Columbia and above the fjords of Norway.

Collin Collins navigates Glacier Country’s huge pillows, massive cliffs and untapped terrain, calling it “the mecca of all meccas,” as world-class snowmobiler Keith Curtis ascends and descends some of those same slopes on his snowmobile.

Skiers George Rodney and Ty Peterson mine white gold near the town of Silverton, Colo., by helicopter, horses and sleds. Snowboarders Seth Wescott and Rob Kingwill carve and float the complex terrain of New Zealand, while Michael “Bird” Shaffer flies via speed wing over the Beartooth Pass on the Wyoming-Montana border.

Tommy Moe skis 4,000 feet of continuous vertical off the Big Red Tram in Jackson Hole and Jonny Moseley dips into deep powder during a record snowfall in Squaw Valley.

“It’s a humbling experience to have Mother Nature be that powerful. It really puts you in your place,” notes JT Holmes, who skied alongside Moseley.

COMING ATTRACTIONS:

The new Homegrown Film Festival, supporting the Friends of the Sawtooth Avalanche Center, will be held Friday, Nov. 10, at The Liberty Theatre in Hailey.

Matchstick Productions’ “Drop Everything” will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, at the Sun Valley Opera House.
