The Wood River Wolverines squared off against the Burley Bobcats Wednesday night in the Wolverine Den at Wood River High School.

The big crowd was treated to a colossal tussle between the fourth-ranked Bobcats and the surging Wolverines, with the game going down to the wire.  Burley (13-6, 7-3) prevailed 41-40 over Wood River (7-14, 5-5), when a desperation three-quarter shot by Travis Swanson (6 points, 3 rebounds) bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

It was Senior Night in Hailey, as the crowd honored the four seniors appearing in their final regular season home game.  Austin Shetler, Nelson “Nellie” Cantrell, Nic Tidwell and Alec Nordsieck  all appeared at center court with family members before the tip-off and were recognized by the many spectators in the packed gym on the campus of Wood River High School.

Both teams exhibited tough defense in the first quarter, playing to a 7-7 tie until a Bobcat 3-point shot as time expired gave Burley a 10-7 lead after the first stanza. Cade Schott (7 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists) came out with the hot hand early, scoring five first quarter points and keeping the Wolverines within striking distance.

A beautifully executed alley oop from Bodie Bennett (3 points, 2 assists) to Nic Tidwell (12 points, 5 rebounds) tied the game at 13 apiece midway through the second quarter. But the Bobcats countered with back-to-back three-point shots and finished the first half on a 10-2 scoring run, giving the Great Basin second-place team a 23-15 lead at the break.

Things looked bleak for Wood River in the third quarter. The Wolverines were trailing by eight points when their star guard Alec Nordsieck (8 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists) went down with an apparent ankle injury.

Nordsieck was helped off the court and into the locker room. But his teammates had his back, and three-point shots by Tidwell and Bennett cut into the Bobcat lead.  The Wolverines battled back to trail by a single point--32-31 at the end of the third period.

Nordsieck, doing his best Willis Reed imitation, came back on the court with 7:35 remaining in the game.  A Cade Schott bucket gave the Wolverines their first lead since early in the first quarter, putting them up 33-32.

The teams traded buckets until a driving layup and free throw by Tidwell gave the Wolverines a four-point lead--40-36, with just under three minutes left in the game.

Missed free throws by the Wolverines proved costly, and a Burley three-point shot pulled the Bobcats within one, 40-39. Another missed opportunity at the free throw stripe by the Wolverines gave Burley a chance, and they took advantage, hitting a well-defended tw-point shot with 1.3 seconds left in the game for a 41-40 lead.

Following a time out, Swanson took the inbounds pass and heaved a 75-foot shot that bounced off the glass and the rim, sealing the victory for the Bobcats.
