The Chamber Singers of the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus will raise their voice, and Mitch Landrieu, until recently the mayor of New Orleans, will offer his perspective of division in America during free Lawn Talks offered this month by the Sun Valley Writers Conference.

Other free Lawn Talks feature novelist Alice McDermott and historian Andrew Roberts.

This is the fourth year that the Writers’ Conference has offered free Lawn Talks to the public. The public will be able to watch the talks via the Pavilion lawn screen.

Here’s the lineup for the Lawn Talks:

  • Sunday, July 21, 4-5 p.m. Alice McDermott, whose book “That Night” was a finalist for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, will discuss “Remembrance of Things That Never Happened.” This lecture is being billed as the inaugural Frank McCourt Memorial Lecture, honoring the writer who was a big part of the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference founding family.

McDermott’s books “At Weddings and Wakes” and “After This” were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize, and her “Charming Billy” won the American Book Award and the National Book Award.

  • Sunday, July 21, 5:30-6:30 p.m. British historian Andrew Roberts will discuss “Churchill: Walking with Destiny.” Roberts is a specialist in World War II history, and he served as an expert on the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997 and the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilia Parker Bowles. His books include “The Storm of War,” which covered Hitler’s rise to power. The Sun day times has called his 2018 biography of “Churchill: Walking with Destiny” “undoubtedly the best single-volume life of Churchill ever written.”
  • Monday, July 22, 4-5 p.m. The Chamber Singers of the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus will perform from their “I Raise My Voice” program. The children’s choir has appeared in performances with such organizations as the Los Angeles Opera and Los
  • Monday, July 22, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Mitch Landrieu, who led the charge to remove four Confederate monuments in New Orleans, will deliver a lecture titled “E Pluribus Unum: How a Divided American Can Win the Future by Finding Common Ground.” Landrieu is the author of “In the Shadow of Statues: A White Southerner Confronts History.”

No reservations or tickets are required. Gates will open 30 minutes prior to the first lawn talk each day.

The sold-out conference will be held Saturday, July 20, to Tuesday, July 23, at Sun Valley Resort. It brings in some of the world’s best writers and thinkers, including journalists, playwrights, poets and filmmakers, to talk about their work.

Fifty Pulitzer Prize winners have spoken at the event over the years, along with 22 National Book Award winners and six winners of Great Britain’s elite Mann Booker Prize.
