Wanted: Youth volunteers to do a weekend trail maintenance project on the North Fork Hyndman Creek trail near Ketchum.

The nonprofit Idaho Trails Association in partnership with Wood River Trails Coalition is looking for volunteers between the ages of 14 and 18 for a project on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 13 and 14.

Youth will learn how to remove logs from the trail using a crosscut saw, and they’ll learn to trim brush to keep the trail clear.

The group will meet at the Hyndman trailhead out East Fork where they will camp for the weekend. Meals will be prepared and provided by the Idaho Trails Association.

No experience is necessary for the free experience, and the cost of the weekend is being picked up by the Wood River Women’s Foundation.

“Our youth trips provide a great opportunity for young people to spend time outdoors enjoying nature and learning how to work together on a trail crew,” said Kelly Hewes, communications director for the Idaho Trails Association. “Thank you to the Wood River Women’s Foundation for making this project possible and giving youth the chance to connect with Idaho’s wild places!”

The Idaho Trails Association was formed in 2010 to deal with the increasing shortage of forest rangers to maintain Idaho’s 10,000 miles of non-motorized hiking trails on public lands. The organization plans several work projects each year, engaging those who are passionate about preserving Idaho’s trails for ongoing recreation and future generations.
