Rick Kessler has the antidote for those who are suffering from withdrawal since the big mountain closed.
It’s called “Ground Swell: The Other Side of Fear,” and the movie is an in-depth look at the 2021-22 big wave season through the eyes of surfers Nic Von Rupp Kai Lenny, Matt Bromley, Torrey Meister and Bianca Valenti.
The film will make its debut at the Magic Lantern Cinema in Ketchum at 7 p.m. Friday, April 21, and it will have an encore each evening at 7 over the next week.
It takes viewers to the highest waves ever filmed, including the occasional hundred-foot monster as it explores why big wave surfers risk their lives to ride mountain-sized waves. It explores how each pushes past his or her fear to find what is on the other side as they tackle Nazare in Portugal, Jaws and Pipeline in Hawaii and Mavericks in Northern California.
The movie is directed by Paul Taublieb who filmed “Blink of An Eye” about the Daytona 500. It features narration by Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin, who was honored during the just-finished Sun Valley Film Festival.
