An absorbing documentary about a Brazilian surfer who faced a grueling comeback following an accident surfing one of the biggest waves in the world at Nazare, Portugal, will be screened at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, at The Argyros in Ketchum.

The documentary won the Sun Valley Film Festival’s 2024 Best Documentary Feature and is being presented as a Best of Fest Encore Screening.

The 95-minute documentary directed by Stephanie Johnes zeroes in on Maya Gabeira, who grew up in Brazil, the daughter of one of the founding members of the Green Party of Brazil and a Brazilian fashion designer.

The record-breaking surfer had to fight chauvinism in her male-dominated sport as she ascended in the sport, then had to fight it a second time as she also fought through a painful rehabilitation to return to the sport she loved.

Tickets are $20, available at https://svffmonthlymovies.eventive.org/schedule/661d7873bf08a80041ad7d34.
