STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN BOSSICK

This has been an uncharacteristically unbountiful year for wildflowers in the Wood River Valley, thanks to a lack of spring rains.

But the wildflowers do seem to be more prevalent higher up.

The Idaho Native Plant Society hopes to take advantage of that when it offers a free wildflower hike to Summit Creek atop Trail Creek Summit.

A couple weeks ago, there were scads of mariposa lilies there, along with bouquets of ripe red Indian paintbrush, elephant heads, shooting stars and more. Jake Moe hiked Summit Creek on Thursday and confirmed the area is still flush with flowers.

Those who wish to go should meet at the Hailey Park and Ride Lot at River and Bullion streets prepared to leave at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3. Or meet at the Hemmingway Memorial parking lot along Sun Valley Road prepared to leave at 9:30 a.m.

Poles are recommended as there is a log crossing.
